Taiwanese reading resources

ChrisClark   March 27th, 2011 11:47a.m.

I'm always trying to expand my web of reading resources, especially ones that help me understand Taiwan better. I prefer things that are online, so that I can load them into Pleco, unless they're at a 6th grade reading level or below. My current favorites:

Taiwan panorama (http://www.taiwan-panorama.com/) - all their online articles are printed in traditional characters, simplified characters, English and Japanese.

Reader's digest http://www.readersdigest.tw/

I'd especially love to find a good online national newspaper or news magazine, but haven't clicked with one yet.

For reading traditional characters I prefer http://news.google.com/news?ned=tw

There you'll find local(Taiwan-related) and international news in traditional characters.

@Phoboss, that is a great site. Lots of the articles from that site are from NOWnews (http://www.nownews.com/). A related site that I found yesterday is http://mag.nownews.com/ - it has selections from 26 Taiwanese magazines, everything from children's magazines to health to fashion to businesss, men's mags, women's mags, it's all there.

Between my 2 old sources, and my 2 new ones, now I have more than enough. Now I'm on the hunt for an online Taiwanese news broadcast with subtitles - it's helpful to listen while I'm reading as well.

You're welcome.
And thank you for the newly discovered site mag.nownews.com! It has good quality articles.

If you found sth. about an news broadcast with subtitles please let us know.

Apple Daily has news and short reports with subtitles.

@ximeng

Awesome. Their light, even creative, touch to news made me shy away from their online printed news, but it works great for video broadcasts. I'll be on that site every day!

One magazines on mag.nownews.com is of particular interest, I believe, to users who want content with a slightly easier reading level. Funday is primarily for learners of English, but all content is bilingual, including supplementary dialogs. Topics are of a more general nature than Taiwan Panorama (which is focused on local topics), and are short in length.

I've found a magazine that I really love. 亚洲周刊 (literally, Asia Weekly) "is the only Chinese language international affairs newsweekly" (Wikipedia). It's published out of Hong Kong and it covers a wide range of stories from all of Asia, and many of them are high on background and historical perspective, making the stories more interesting to me than other news sources I've used. So, for instance, this month I've read articles on the struggle to retain secular democracy in Indonesia, another on Henry Kissinger and China's relationship to the US, and another on the Taiping rebellion. I would recommend purchasing the magazine, because of the great photography, but all of the articles are available online in their entirety, but without photographs at http://www.yzzk.com/. It's available online and in print in both traditional and simplified characters. The only caution I have is that the Chinese used is quite formal and aimed at a more educated reader than an average magazine, but I use the print and electronic versions together, so Pleco helps me out.
