Visual Feedback on Pending Requests

patstam   May 15th, 2011 4:35a.m.

There seem to be quite a few features on the site that rely on asynchronous requests to fetch data (paging through queue/my words, waiting for search results, etc), some of which can take some time, especially when the site is slow. Whenever I need to wait for something like this without any indication that its actually doing something I get antsy, second-guess whether I clicked it or not and end up clicking again (maybe making things worse?).

It would certainly ease my mind to have some kind of visual feedback. A simple animation would be fine, just something to say "yes we got you, just hold on until we get a response". Anyone else agree?

I agree! I have had that on the to-do list for forever. Or maybe it's on Scott's to-do list. Or both. Anyway, we'll build this at some point, and it will be helpful.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Most of the asynchronous list paging uses the same code, and should show a "Loading" cover over the table. This is used in the forum topics page, custom lists page, lots of the pages in the my words tab, and a whole bunch of other places. Does it not show up for you properly? What browser are you using? Or is it elsewhere that this shows up? Let me know the specific pages and I'll work on them.

The queue is the only one I know of where it doesn't do this. But the queue is being replaced so it doesn't get upgrades I'm afraid.

I could have sworn that I hadn't seen that loading overlay on the my words list before, but I see it there now. I must have been mistaken, sorry about that.

I guess the queue was my biggest complaint then, but if it you have plans already then more power to you. Thanks all.
