possible to make individual lists on Anki ?

Bohan   April 2nd, 2011 4:50a.m.

Is it possible for me to make individual lists of flashcards on Anki and study them separately ? I tried to do that just now, but I'm suspecting that everything just gets dumped into one big pile, is that right ?

Mandarinboy   April 2nd, 2011 5:21a.m.

Depends on how the list looks like that you import. I import new list to Anki about once a week. One with the words from Skritter and another one for sentences and patterns. You can arrange your lists in many different ways in Anki so there should not be any problem to do what you like to do. I often also export my starred words from Skritter to yet another Anki list. I use mainly Anki to be able to study while on the train to work where I can't skritter. Explain what you like to do in more detail and we might be able to help you out.

okay, so if I export words from Skritter, where do I save them so that I can import them into Anki ? Because with Anki, I can't just paste the words in

Bohan   April 2nd, 2011 5:58a.m.

another thing I'm having trouble with right now is when I open Anki, it says "update available", but I've already clicked download, and then downloaded the update 3/4 times. It still keeps popping up with "update available"

Mandarinboy   April 2nd, 2011 9:28a.m.

Open up notepad. Export from Skritter and copy the export text. Paste it all in notepad. Save the file and make sure you save it as UTF-8 (change encoding from "Ansi" till "UTF-8"). This file you can import to Anki. When Importing to Anki I usually change the Import form to match my file. I have then Chinese, pinyin and translation. In the deck i then choose to have character on one side and pinyin and translation on the other. There are other ways to do this as well.

About the update, try to remove the old version and then download the latest version. Sounds like a corrupted installation to me.

Thank you sir . I'll try all of this out in the morning

Bohan   April 2nd, 2011 6:44p.m.

@Mandarinboy

Alright I did what you told me and so far so good.

One thing I can't figure out right now is , if I open Anki , and then click on a list, and then click on the magnifying glass to see what items are in the list, how can I go back to that main window that shows all of the lists ? What I have been doing up to now is closing Anki and then re-opening it, because I can't figure out how to get back to the main window

Bohan   April 2nd, 2011 6:50p.m.

@Mandarinboy can you please explain how you get both pinyin and English on the back side of the cards ? I can only get one or the other

Mandarinboy   April 2nd, 2011 7:46p.m.

As for getting back to choose list you can click on the right most Icon, the one looking like and blue and white card.

For getting pinyin and translation on the back, this is how I do it.(there are many ways and I am a beginner with Anki.)

- Create a a new deck.
- Go to "Settings" and then "Deck properties".
- Click "Edit" on the new screen for the deck.
- Click on "Card layout" on the new window.
- Change tab to "Fields"
- Click "Add" and name the new field e.g. "3".
- Switch tab to "Card templates"
- On the second textfield there will say"{{Back}}". Copy this and and paste it in.
- If you like to have line breaks between pinyin and translation, just add one or two between the two fields. You can always go back later and change this even after you imported your data.
- Change the newly pasted info from {{Back}} to {{3}}
- If choose to have line breaks it should now look like this:

{{Back}}

{{3}}
You can play around with colors, sizes etc here.
- Click Close,close and close and you are back to the main window again.
- Go to "File" and "Import" Choose your Skritter file.
- Click import
You are done.

I use this on my Ipad and it is actually very nice. Perfect training when you can't skritter.

Bohan   April 2nd, 2011 8:12p.m.

Alright I followed the instructions the best I could, but I must have done something wrong because only the English is showing up on the back side of the cards.

Where I got confused was from here on down :

" On the second textfield there will say"{{Back}}". Copy this and and paste it in.
- If you like to have line breaks between pinyin and translation, just add one or two between the two fields. You can always go back later and change this even after you imported your data.
- Change the newly pasted info from {{Back}} to {{3}}
- If choose to have line breaks it should now look like this:

{{Back}}

{{3}}
You can play around with colors, sizes etc here.
- Click Close,close and close and you are back to the main window again.
- Go to "File" and "Import" Choose your Skritter file.
- Click import
You are done. "

In that second textfield, it was originally :
{{{Back}}}

I deleted that whole thing and pasted in {{Back}}. Then I changed it to :
{{Back}}

{{3}}

Do you know what I did wrong ?

Bohan   April 2nd, 2011 8:14p.m.

oops, I meant in that second field it was originally :

{{{Back}}}

I deleted that and pasted in :

{{Back}}

{{3}}

Bohan   April 2nd, 2011 8:15p.m.

hmmmmm, it's not letting me show what was originally there, that I deleted.

Mandarinboy   April 2nd, 2011 10:39p.m.

Are you doing this against an already imported list or a new one? This instruction is only for when you create a new deck and import new data. I just did import my weekly skritter data so it do work;-). Drop me an mail on malteontravel at gmail dot com and I try to send you some screen shots how to do it. Probably not going to happen today though since we will have an power blackout again soon so I will go out and have a look at the cherry treas instead:-)

Bohan   April 3rd, 2011 12:08a.m.

I did it with a new list. I'll send you an email right now. Thanks for your help !
