For the fun of it

Needed some distraction from studying serious things and found this rather odd guy: http://www.chinesewithmike.com/2012/08/ Beginner level but with a twist and no writing but still a lot of fun.

For listening and reading I am also a Alpha tester on fluentfix. They take youtube movies of high quality and add transcripts with Chinese, pinyin and translation on the fly. Rather nice. Only simplified and several flaws but still a good way to practice listening and reading. Se this review: http://chinesehacks.com/resources/web/fluentflix-beta-review/ No study features, poor text to speech quality for individual words etc. But the movies helps me a lot.

For the ones studying New Practical Chinese reader series we have this site: http://www.ronlitutor.com/NewPracticalChineseReader_Lesson1.php
They have the lessons with the text, translations and videos for each chapter. Videos can also be found on you-tube as channels: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB1B262B05A6992FD&feature=plpp

Mike老师's videos were what I used to start learning Mandarin about a year ago. I have emailed him a few times and he seems like a really nice guy.

I heard from a native speaker that his accent isn't perfect, but what I really liked was the way he over-emphasised tones, complete with hand signals. They are very accessible for a beginner too.

I created a text file of vocabulary flashcards for the first 50 lessons over on the Pleco forums, he also has downloadable PDFs for most lessons with hanzi and pinyin.

@Mandarinoy

Is fluent flix membership paid ?
Is the site still in beta?

Mandarinboy   August 6th, 2012 5:48a.m.

It is free right now for the alpha testers, no info what will happen later but since they run it as a company i am 100% sure it will be a pay site when it is launched. They do however have a lot of bugs to fix first. Nice idea though with the subtitled movies. I can choose to have that on, or just remove translation etc so it makes great listening and reading practice. As it is now I would however not pay to use it.

@ mandrinboy..

Do you have any beta invites for fluent flix left? If yes please add mine to the list.

Mandarinboy   August 6th, 2012 6:19a.m.

Sorry Sandeep, I have never had any. I have in fact no idea how I ever become a alpha tester. I just got a mail the other day that I where. So that is why i try it out now.

Nice, thanks, Mike was fun, about my level, will check it out :)

In case you want to add any of the vocab from "Chinese with Mike", I added a Skritter list which I'll keep updated: http://www.skritter.com/vocab/list?list=200592151

Sandeep   August 20th, 2012 1:45p.m.

is there a torrent where i can download all of mike's lessons in a go?

Alan   August 20th, 2012 1:50p.m.

I don't think so- you can watch them all on Youtube and Youku though. You could use a Youtube downloader to pull them all down (rather painful to do), I don't really see the point though unless you have a burning need to study them away from an Internet connection.

I combined all of the lesson PDFs he has made (all found on http://chinesewithmike.com ) into one file, which you can have if you want. It makes finding things a bit easier.
