definitions being counted on progress page?

jww1066   December 15th, 2009 4:21p.m.

I recently re-added all my characters to the queue so I could practice their definitions, and have been going through those definitions without running into any new characters. Even so, it looks like my "characters" total on the progress page is increasing. Are definitions being counted the same as characters?

if so it will make my quest for 2000 and eventually 3000 characters a lot easier :)

but yeah that doesn't really make sense...

I just created a new account and just added definitions in Chinese, and the characters learned graph didn't go up, so I'm 99% it's not happening (I also never noticed it happening for my own practice of Japanese).

I looked at your queue though and you're adding a ton of new words for their writings and tones at the moment. Are you sure you've gotten to the point in your queue where you re-added all those words and characters to add their definitions? Because right now, your queue doesn't have any definitions to add for at least the next couple hundred words.

Oh yeah, I'm getting prompted a lot of definitions of words I already know how to write. I also thought I was going to have to wait for them, but they seem to have jumped the queue somehow.

Well you're also adding words from lists, right? As you add them from lists, that should be where your definitions are coming from, cause I don't think you're getting definitions from your queue for a while. I think the characters graph must be going up from words you continue to add writings for from the queue and from lists you're adding from. Does that make sense with what you're seeing?

I exported my complete character list just now (12-16) and compared it with the export I did on 12-12. There are only 8 new words and characters.

I am seeing all sorts of definitions of previously-studied characters; by no means are they limited to those 8 new items. I also didn't restart any of my lists as far as I know.

My only two active lists are "1000 Most Frequent" and "All Rather Simple Characters":

"1000 Most Frequent" says I completed Section 301-400 on 8/19, so I don't think it got restarted.

The "progress" graph shows about 1275 characters known as of 12/12, and about 1310 as of 12/16, a difference of about 35.

I'm mystified as to why the definitions are cropping up now rather than waiting their turn. Not that it's a problem, but I don't understand how they jumped the queue.

The definitions would have been added from those two active lists, I guess without finishing another section just yet. They would come from words in those lists for which you have learned the writings and tones, perhaps from another list.

The progress stats show that you learned 55 characters' writings this last week, but you only added 5. So you are consolidating your mastery, see.
