My wife just gave me this Chinese name (my real name is Johan Van something). I wanted something that would at least sound a little bit similar. What do you all think of it?

Haha it's nice and to me as a Dutchman also funny that you implemented the 'van' as a surname! And of course you got the great traditional given name translated into Bohan, you can tell the older Chinese men it's from Johan (Cruijff as well as some Belgian greats, they might recognize it. My mother went to China in the early 90's and the men would often mention Johan Cruijff). The hanzi are not too easy and overly common which is cool too.

It is an often used practise like 澳大利亚 but I think you can do better than this.
The Chinese language is so full of colorful and bold expressions.
I am working on this issue myself. Having lived in China for two years now, I have not found a suitable Chinese name for myself, but I will soon.
Why not find a name for yourself that makes a great statement of who you are, what you believe in, or what you want. If there is a place on Earth where you can get away with this and even be taken seriously, it is China.

Carsten, my wife explained the meaning of the name to me as such:

范 (fan4) as in 模范 (mo2fan4): exemplary, model
博 (bo2) as in 渊博 (yuan1bo2, erudite), 博览 (bo2la3n, read widely) or 博物馆 (bo2wu4guan3, museum): [to be] knowledgeable
涵 (han2)：tolerant, understanding, forgiving

I think it is quite good. Especially for a name that actually resembles my Western one in terms of pronunciation. At least she has a good impression of me. :-)

You are very lucky to have an understanding spouse helping you along. It shows the way for others, and so far my employees have been very helpful with my efforts, so they will help me also in finding a fitting Chinese name.
