Looks like the Great Firewall or something like it is preventing you from completely loading www.skritter.com because it is hosted on Google App Engine, which is periodically blocked. Try instead our mirror:

legacy.skritter.cn

This might also be caused by an internet filter, such as SafeEyes. If you have such a filter installed, try adding appspot.com to the list of allowed domains.

Example sentences won't download

I am using the iOS app. I am aware that the recent update stops automatic downloading of sentences, so I turned on the "download sentences" option. What am I still missing?

It should download sentences for any new words that are synced (in addition to any sentences you might have already downloaded before installing the update). If you had "download sentences" sentences off and did a full sync (like with a reinstall or a Clear Local Data), you wouldn't see any sentences. If you then turned the setting on, you still wouldn't see any until you did a Clear Local Data.

At least, that's how it is supposed to work. Are you seeing something different?
