Android 4.2.2, Browsers, & Flash

chip256   May 12th, 2014 12:48p.m.

I've compiled a list of Android browsers that work and don't work for my phone. I'm running Android v.4.2.2 and have flash installed from my favorite source.

Beyond the first two, which are the only acceptable browsers for me, they are in no particular order.

Edit: UC Browser is easily the best browser for the flash page. However it seems to just hang with the HTML5 page though it may still be downloading as I wasn't on WiFi.

There may be additional setting in each browser that would make them more effective for Skritter but for the most part all I've enables was plugins (Flash) and full screen where possible.

I still use the HTML5 version occasionally if I feel like beta testing or if I am off the "grid" but the Flash version is still superior in my opinion so far (better controls).

Here's hoping this doesn't look to bad when I paste it from MSWord.

1) Boat Browser
Pros:
Runs Flash
Has very good full screen mode w/o status bar or menu bars
Cons:
Does not zoom out to fit entire page
Has strange artifacts after each written character
Double taps occasionally
Zoom buttons are over the “save review” button
Determination:
Good for Skrittering, avoid double taps by long pressing on screen

2) UC Browser
Pros:
Runs Flash
Has very good full screen mode w/o status bar or menu bars
Runs Flash faster than other browsers
Cons:
Does not zoom out to fit entire page
There is no “save review” button (I believe it is behind the flash)
Flash is layered on top of everything (fixed by quickly taping on flash before page finished loading)
Determination:
This would be an excellent candidate if the save reviews button was present. Otherwise you will lose the last few minutes of Skrittering.

3) Lightning Browser
Pros:
Runs Flash
“Full Screen Mode” Disables menu bar but not soft buttons
Can hide status bar
Cons:
Menu bar appears on every down stroke
No ability to zoom out past page boarders
Cannot see full page
Determination:
To irritating to run Skitter because of menu bar disturbance

4) Fire Fox
Pros:
Runs Flash
Cons:
Does not lock on flash
Will not accept strokes
Determination:
Unusable without ability to lock on flash

5) Fire Fox Beta
Pros:
Runs Flash
Cons:
Does not lock on flash
Will not accept strokes
Determination:

6) Baidu Browser

Determination:

12) FlashFox

Determination:
Tolerable for short periods of Skrittering

14) Puffin Web Browser

Wow, you've certainly broken down the various browsers on Android! While the flash version won't be getting any updates aimed at improving Android browser performance you might be interested in the response I gave on a post by SpokeLee.

We're really hoping to take away the misery Android users have had to endure with haste.

I desperately wanted to get UC Browser to work properly because the Flash is so smooth.

I found a "work around" for the flash floating on top of everything. If you activate the flash plugin before the page finishes loading the save reviews button will appear on top.

UC Browser is easily the best browser for the flash page. However it seems to just hang with the HTML5 page though it may still be downloading as I wasn't on WiFi.

Hello Chip.
Thanks for taking the time to put together a list of all the browsers on Android and their relative performance levels. I have started using the UC browser based on your recommendation and it is fantastic. I switched back from the HTML5 version to using the Flash version again. However, just like you I have the problem of the "save reviews" button not staying on-top of the Flash part of the site. I have tried your "work around," but so far it hasn't worked for me.

I am going to continue using the UC browser though, as it is a hundred times better performance than I was previously getting, so thanks again for pointing that out. I don't even mind losing a couple minutes skrittering for increased responsiveness.

Just out of curiosity I ran the browser after reading your message without doing my own workaround and it worked just fine.

I am not certain what may have changed. I did reinstall it, restarted my phone since, and added a quick link to my home screen. I don't see why any of those would fix it though.

I also made sure I had the most recent version of Flash and uninstalled and reinstalled that.

Just some thoughts. Best of luck.

Hello Chip, sorry for taking so long to get back to you. After the first day of using it the problem seemed to correct itself and I have been using it without any trouble getting to the "save reviews" button. Maybe it was because the next day I had updated my phones flash version through the browser. I am not sure why it fixed itself, but it does run nicely now.

I'm starting to use UC Browser, the only way I can see the "Save reviews" button is clicking on the Ban icon, so a popup appears and then I can zoom out.
Sadly, I can't press that button (because clicking only closes the popup).
Al least it is a way to see if there pending reviews to save.
