Android App?

SpokeLee   May 12th, 2014 10:51p.m.

Any plans on packaging the new HTML5 version into an app for the play store? It would be so great to not have to screw around with a browser.

Is this possible?

mcfarljw   May 13th, 2014 12:59a.m.

Hey SpokeLee, you're right! Fiddling around with the browser can be quite tedious and is something that appears to be causing people several issues (as well as the Skritter team).

We have been striving to package it as a native Android application to be released on Google Play (and other methods for people without access to it). We collected some testers for it awhile back, but Apple bought the method we were using to distribute builds.

That initial test release was plagued with lots of performance issues, especially writing speeds. We have since made a lot of progress and while we don't have a launch date it's something we're really pushing for. In fact there have been more than 600 GitHub commits towards the native Android build

It's taking longer than we had initially expected. But we're hoping to have a native public beta build as soon as possible.

Awesome, glad to hear! Hope development goes smoother for you guys.

Hooray. Maybe if it's an app there will be some way for me to finally use it - never did succeed in getting my gigundo file to finish the initial DL properly.

@Nicki, hopefully so! We've rewritten almost the entire download and loading processes so that it's better handled in memory with larger accounts. Plus having the app wrapped natively helps with stability as well.

I'm so glad to hear that progress is being made on an Android app! I look forward to one day enjoying Skritter on my Android devices instead of always fighting my boyfriend for his iPad, haha

Yeah I would also be extremly glad if there is finally a useable version of the android app. Because no matter when I try to use it there always seems to be a major bug.

Right now I have a vocab 嘴唇磨出泡子。 Everytime I am supposed to put in the tone for Chun nothing happens. The app doesnt regcognize my input. Its so weird, happens with no other character. And there is not even a option to skip the card and advance to a new word... :S

Are mnemonics supported in the HTML5 version?
I can't get them to show up :(

mcfarljw   June 10th, 2014 1:46p.m.

@fangshi, Keep an eye out, we've been working on some stuff which we plan on announcing in the very near future.

@pizigi, I thought I'd fixed them awhile back so they would show up, though they still can't be directly edited via the html5 application. Do you have a specific example that has a mnemonic that is showing on the Flash site, but not the html5? I'll give it another look specifically in the context of your account.

pizigi   June 11th, 2014 2:38a.m.

I don't see the mnemonics for any character or words in the HTML 5 version, at all.
I don't really use the Flash web version, only the iOS app, but I just tried it and noticed you have to assign a mnemonic to yourself, which I don't need to do on iOS.
I suppose the issue happens because I have not yet assigned a mnemonic to that specific word/character, and it fails to show up in the HTML 5?
If that's the case, what about adopting a similar approach as the iOS app?
