Progress report erratic?

marchey   September 3rd, 2009 9:47a.m.

Could someone please explain the Progress Report to me? The figures on it seem to be somewhat erratic. I have been using the website for about 10 days now. In the beginning my progress was quick, in line with the fact that I already know many characters. But these last few days the Skritter continues to throw words and characters at me that I know really very well. The number of characters and words learned stayed more or less unchanged. I found this weird. Now the numbers are actually decreasing. So what is happening? This feature doesn't seem to be production ready. Maybe it would be better to remove it?

The progress page statistics apply to the currently specified date range only, with the default being the last week. It's a little unclear, I know.

The words you know really well could be ones you got right the first time, which by default are scheduled about a week (to make sure you did know them). They get pushed further back very quickly after that, if you keep getting them right.

Also I was wondering, I'm approaching the 1-year mark. Will the progress report extend beyond one year?
I would especially like to know the grand totals ^_^

I also prefer the grand-total-view (currently: 1 year). It would be nice to be able to change the default here in the settings.

That's funny, I was just about to post the exact same thing as JB and henning. Usually I don't care about the progress but about the grand totals. Would it be possible to add those to the week/month/year displays?

The progress report reminder has some extra totals. I just found that out as I got my first emailed report

I agree with Marchey. Characters i know very well are coming up too quickly/often it feels and thus i don't get the same rate of progress that i got in the beginning. I wish there was a "force new characters" option or something. I want to learn more and more even after i zero out my queue but, i'm stuck chasing my tail. Anyone else have feelings on this?

In the menu=>progress=>reminders you can set your a goal per day. But I am almost sure that this is only used in the reminder e-mail as a way to compare what you have achieved that week with your goal. It would be nice if it could influence the practice section.

Sure, now that we're actually about a year since beta launch, I'll put on the list to allow users to see their overall history no matter how long they've been here. Is there anything else you'd like to see added to the progress page? I remember someone wanting a graph of how many words they know as well as characters, so I'll try to put that in as well; shouldn't be difficult.

scott,
while your on it: It would be nice to be able to split the totals to get the sums for Simplified, Traditional, and "Neutral". :)

Afraid we can't do that anymore. With the recent reorganization of the way we store progress data, it no longer differentiates between one or the other. Sorry about that!
