Links in the Forum

aharlekyn   June 7th, 2012 12:55a.m.

Currently when we click on a link in the forum, it just goes to the address.

Would it be possible to change it that when clicking on a link your browser opens a new tab.

Most forums, social networks etc. works this way.

Am I the only one that would find this useful? Is it hard to implement?

In IE9, I just right-click the link and select "Open in New Tab".

Yea its the same in Chrome. But if we are all opening new tabs for a link - and it seems to be the norm everywhere - it would be easier if it happens with just one click...

I've been in the habit of middle clicking any link for years...

wow you can middle click links???
*mind blown*

Browser still support left clicking links? :O hehe

I'm also a middle click addict of many years. Middle clicking links is one of the reasons I'm happy the web is moving away from flash. As much as I like the funky animations and effects you can get with flash, damn its annoying you can't middle click their buttons! I even actually like it when sites don't auto open links in a new tab - that way I can choose. It's one button either way but if I'm finished with site I can left click and leave, or if I want to keep it I can middle click.

ctrl+left click for new tab also works in most browsers as well. Great for laptop touch pads where middle click is hard or impossible to do. Also sometimes handy on computers where the mouse wheel button is annoyingly hard to press.

I agree with what kaysik said about being able to choose whether a link opens in a new tab or not.

I personally find it worse than annoying when I can't open a link in the current tab; I have to close all the tabs that I opened the new ones from and it eventually adds up to a lot of time wasted.

Keep the current functionality!

I've noticed on most Chinese sites new pages are always opened in a new tab when left-mouse clicking, while on most Western sites they are opened in the current tab. I guess I'm not the only one who has noticed that here, any possible reasons?
I'm gonna go with the cultural one and say that Chinese have more patience while on the computer and so are less bothered by a bunch of tabs flying around...... (hey, I've got real human sources to back that up scientifically...)
Looking forward to more suggestions:)

Setting links to open in new tabs is often a greedy behavior, since the visitor has to do more work to leave your site. It robs the visitor of control, since then they can't easily choose to open it in the current tab, and they can always choose to open it in another tab anyway (if they know how).

In some sites, this makes sense--you usually don't want your slow-loading, context-laden Gmail to go away when you click a link. For most sites, it's bad.

I did not know about middle clicking links! Thanks!

This is great!

I am still sceptic, however. Who leaves a forum in a middle of a post?
