Audio issues

Schnabelhund   June 29th, 2014 10:34a.m.

There are several words I sent audio corrections for but they don't seem to get fixed. I don't mind this very much because I can see the pinyin anyway, but can you at least disable the sounds for these words? The wrong pronunciations are irritating and they get stuck in my head.

In general, it'd be nice if we could disable sounds of individual words by ourselves.

+1 from me

Skritter dudes?

ジェレミー (Jeremy)   July 5th, 2014 10:58p.m.

There's a due batch of audio updates I'm getting to, sorry for the delay on this. I'm not sure about the disabling of sounds on a user basis, but the goal would be to have no inconsistencies!

Schnabelhund   July 6th, 2014 8:17p.m.

All I ask for is for you to disable these audio clips, not to immediately upload the correct audio. I don't mean to nag, but the wrong audio is irritating.

And allow me to rant about how corrections are handled in general. It just takes too long. Apparently, some of the items take months for you to correct when we might need to know the words the next day for a test. I really think we should be able to make corrections for ourselves on a user basis for every item, much like definition is handled. Why on Earth shouldn't we? You really need to take our corrections more seriously.

Schnabelhund, it's a big technical limitation to let users correct vocab fields. It works for definitions because it piggybacks on custom definitions, but custom definitions were worth the huge amount of work to support them everywhere–not so for custom readings, custom audio, custom stroke orders, custom decompositions, etc.

There are a huge amount of corrections coming in every day, and some of them take a long time to do, especially the audio ones, which often need me to regenerate all app audio bundles and deploy an app update. Please be patient; Jeremy and Evan have their hands overflowing with the correction load.

I don’t know how Skritter works internally, but here’s what this whole issue boils down to:

1. User sees wrong word
2. User sends correction
3. Nothing happens for months

Frankly, I don’t care how we’re supposed to get the correction in time, but it can’t go on like this. You don’t want user based corrections, fine, then you have to take care of corrections faster. I’m not even asking for them to be done immediately or the next day, but honestly one week would already be pushing it. As of now, not only does it take months, it already took you guys a whole week to respond to this thread alone, and only after I bumped it.

So there are more corrections coming in every day than you guys can handle? Well then it *might* be worth the while to implement user-based corrections after all, otherwise you need more personnel who take care of corrections, as two people apparently aren’t enough. Because for now, we have to put up with wrong words popping up for months and with the frustration that comes with it; no matter how well we understand intellectually what’s wrong with the word, the incorrect version of it will stick in our minds. The only way to avoid this is to ban those words, which means that we’ll never be studying them. And that’s when we ask ourselves what on Earth the purpose of Skritter is in the first place.

"There are a huge amount of corrections coming in every day, and some of them take a long time to do, especially the audio ones [...]"

Back to topic. Again, I’m not asking you to correct the audio, just please remove the wrong clips.

Sorry for being the crankiest user in the forum.

I feel I can't help but voice my thanks to Jeremy and Evan who have been amazing at implementing definition, pinyin corrections etc. They're working very hard!

From my understanding, audio corrections are a different type of update, and that allowing users to add custom audio is a huge exercise that unfortunately isn't a priority - so although I get that it's annoying to have the wrong sounds sometimes, give them a break! :)

ジェレミー (Jeremy)   July 9th, 2014 7:17p.m.

@Schnabelhund, The Japanese side is caught up to date with corrections (not as many corrections come in), however it's the unwieldy overload of Chinese corrections that come in which are several thousand backed up. Thank you for voicing out, this shouldn't be overlooked and should be higher priority. Disabling audio clips shouldn't take as much time as replacing them with correct audio.

If you would like to send in your corrections to me personally at jeremy@skritter.com, I promise you they will be handled in a speedy fashion.

@Catherine: Aw, your too kind! thanks :)

Schnabelhund   July 9th, 2014 7:45p.m.

Thanks, Jeremy :) I’m glad my criticism (read: rant) doesn’t fall on deaf ears.

Sorry I made such a harsh post, but this is the third thread I started in order to call your attention to pending corrections. I’m sure both of you are working hard, but all I can see on my side are the results, and that is that these errors remain. And for a piece of educational software, the elimination of errors in what it’s supposed to teach should be of paramount importance.

"If you would like to send in your corrections to me personally at jeremy@skritter.com, I promise you they will be handled in a speedy fashion!"

I honestly don’t want to put my corrections ahead of those of other users and I don’t want to jump the queue. I think it’d be fair to make the corrections in chronological order.
