A few questions about iOS app

mrxonix   January 29th, 2014 1:11p.m.

I've finally updated my iPad and Skritter to the iOS 7.

A couple of issues/questions I would appreciate help or advice with:

- Top toolbar icons are now extremely small. My vision isn't great - so their new size makes it a bit difficult to use. Is there a chance it's configurable somehow?

- I like how example sentences are now shown under characters, really helpful. Unfortunately, below those sentences are "mnemonics". They may be helpful to some, but I find "mnemonics" distracting. Is there a way to globally turn off "mnemonics" display?

The icon sizes are not configurable, sorry!

Mnemonics will only display once toggling the drop down display to see the example sentence/mnemonic area, though there's currently no option to disable them from showing up in that view.

Poll suggestion - how many people use mnemonics

ricksh   January 29th, 2014 7:42p.m.

re. turning off mnemonics, its not like other features though, the ones who do use it have spent a lot of time putting info they want in that box so can see in ios app etc.

mrxonix   January 29th, 2014 11:41p.m.

the ones who do use it should be the ones that can use it.

because of mnemonics I can't open and read the example sentence. as soon as I open that drop down, I automatically read the mnemonic sentence (which to me looks like distracting gibberish, no offense). And while my brain tries to bring some sense to the mnemonic nonsense - I lose track of the actual study.

So, instead of facilitating learning, the new functionality is slowing it down.

I have to say, after a day of use of the new version, that the current iOS version so far has been quite frustrating because of these issues (mnemonics, icon sizes, position of character information sub-dialog, sound effects and a few others). I realize that I only worth $50 to Scritter, if that, and that Skritter developers are moving on to other things. I develop end user software too - I know how it works.

That said, to me subscription is only worth it if product helps me achieve my goals better than doing without would. I probably won't renew my subscription based on current experience - although I'll keep fingers crossed and hope something changes before it expires in a few months.

Many of the mnemonics made public (which I suspect is a small percentage) look like gibberish to me too (or only make sense if use Hoenig book etc.), I personally would prefer not to see other people's mnemonics too (which happens where I have not made one), I only want to see mine.

btw sound effects are annoying, but is an option to turn off in the settings box

mrxonix   January 30th, 2014 9:34a.m.

I liked sound effects in old version. The "ding" after correct/incorrect check helped me move along (in a Pavlovian way, I guess). In current version "dings" are relatively quiet but the sound of paper torn off became louder and more jarring. I am learning to learn without sound now.

I'm a bit confused, because none of the icons or sound effects changed in the iOS 7 update. Which iPad model is this?

I don't think we are going to add an option to hide mnemonics, as it's something that hasn't been asked for very much, and we try to avoid adding extra options that aren't going to be used by a significant proportion of users–options are generally much more costly than they seem.

ipad 2. previously the only available version was for iphone which I was able to run in 2x zoom mode - hence bigger icons (and closing the character info window required click in the same place as opening it which was quite convenient)

as to mnemonics, here is one for "zi" (child):
"Imagine a small CHILD playing at home, rolling WHEELS about on the floor. The ROBOT babsitter emits a "zzz" sound, as though asleep, and then pretends to wake up with a start each time a wheel crashes into him."
Whoever wrote it scares me. Is there any quality filtering on that?

I've been deleting this ridiculous junk one at a time, but it's very distracting. If you let people select what characters to study - you should let them select what mnemonics to study as well, including none.
