"ban items" feature not working

Bohan   December 11th, 2011 9:12a.m.

There must be some sort of bug or something, because there has been a couple of items that I've been trying to ban, but they keep showing up again and again.

This is the last item that I tried to ban a few times:
商女不知亡国恨隔江犹唱后庭花

In order for us to track this down, can you describe in detail the steps you're taking to ban it?

Bohan   December 11th, 2011 10:28a.m.

hey Nick,

What I've been doing is clicking the red circle with the diagonal line. I do this every time I get an item in my review queue that I think is just not practical to have on Skritter.

I hope this isn't a lot of trouble to track down. If it is, just forget it. I'll just click "too easy" every time those items come up so that they eventually stop coming.

Bohan, are you banning items while you study? If so, are you refreshing the study window after you ban an item?

I'm banning writings for some unfamiliar words until I've seen them a number of times. I'm doing this as they come up, while I'm studying. I've found that if I ban a word, it will come back up again in a short while as I continue to study, but if I refresh the window once, it will not come up until I unban it.

I am having the same problem. For example, some days ago I banned 未得 from my studies. But just now I got a prompt for it.

At first I thought I hadn't really banned it. And when I used the hourglass to try to ban it again, I saw that it's settings were already set for ban! So somehow it's "leaking" through.

@Bohan: I checked your account and you have only the writing for that word banned, but not the other three. Is this what you intended? Is it the writing that has been showing up though you don't want it to?

@atdlouis: Usually when this happens I can see the discrepancy in the data, but in this case I can't. Those items really shouldn't be showing up, unless, did you try and unban and then unban that word since you posted? Are they still showing up? What form of study are you doing when they show up? What parts are showing up?

Bohan   January 2nd, 2012 3:18a.m.

@Scott, I originally only wanted to ban that item from showing up while I practice writing, but now I'm just trying to get rid of it altogether, but it keeps coming. I've tried banning all parts multiple times, and I've also tried refreshing, but it keeps coming

@Bohan: I'm not sure where the bug is, but I've set up some debugging code to figure it out. Could you switch to beta testing (if you're not already a beta tester) and then study as normal? Assuming the code triggers correctly, whenever a word gets added even if it's banned, the system should throw an exception and either the page or the study system should cease to function for you. Then I'll know exactly where things are going wrong, and you can switch back to the stable site and continue to study normally until I remove the debugging code and fix the source of the issue. Assuming everything goes according to plan!

If this doesn't work, I have another thing we can try when Nick comes back from vacation.
