Words

So I've just started studying words with Skritter (and it's super pretty, like everything else), buuuttttt I don't really understand how it works. First of all, I'm only doing the writings of all the kanjis (out of laziness, mostly). And, at least in the mobile app, it seems like it grades the kanji seperately, even though they're in the same word. Does this mean that they will eventually be presented seperately? (So you're just tested on the 序 in 秩序).

Secondly, there's a funky bug going in the mobile app that I think is preventing it from testing me on rare kanji (but I'm not super sure), because I totally have it turned on, but I haven't seen some kanji from words at the beginning of the list I'm studying. (Like the kanji for これ).

It won't separate the kanji for a word composed of more than one. It will ask you the word more often until you are able to write both correctly. to be fair there are many kanji in japanese that have no meaning by themselves so it would be probably bad study to study them individually.

if you would like to though you can make your own list of kanji you know you want to study separately

also for long words made of like 4 or 5 kanji i recommend that you turn off the kanji practice for them and only study the reading/meaning. then if you don't know any of the kanji then break it up into its smaller components/words and add them to the/another list

Haha it's good to know they'll never split up. Bath at would kinda suck. And I just realized that studying words is really a lot more fun than just studying the characters (whether or not it's actually more useful, I cant say)

Hi weirdesky,

I'm trying to reproduce the issue with rare kanji, but I can't. Are you not getting any rare kanji to study? Did you change your settings at some point? What list are you studying from that has rare kanji that you're not getting?

weirdesky   May 17th, 2012 8:32p.m.

This problem was two-fold: One, the mobile app and web app don't always sync up the rare kanji switch (i.e. the mobile app defaults it to off regardless of the web app's settings). I hadn't noticed that yet, but now it's on. The secondary part of the problem I think was that new words syncing problem which you've already got covered with the latest update.

I have since reviewed 此れ, and I don't think I'm missing any other words that were in the lists that I've studied.

However, the list I was using was JLPT Level 4.

Yes, the settings switching to defaults is a bug I've got on my list. Nick has fairly regularly had his auto-advance setting switch back to default as well. No other reports of this happening though.
