Probably because he/she thought that what you wanted was the hanzi for your pinyin. (He/she wrote at the end: 'My English ain't too hot, so I dunno if this is what you were after.')

Cut and paste chinese characters into Google translate, and it will put the pinyin underneath.

I thought I would tell you about a site you might want to check-out called Lang-8 ( http://lang-8.com/ ). It lets you write a chinese language journal that is edited by native speakers. This could be a good way to get some awesome sentence level feedback. You can even put the english translation underneath to help you work on both skills at once!

This gives you a great way to first try to produce the language on your own, and then get native speaker feedback that you can check over later. Olle and myself have used this site a lot in the past, and I'm sure a lot of other users have enjoyed it as well. Also, it's a great way to start making new Chinese friends. Of course they'll want to have you check some of their journals as well, but the feedback you get from them makes it well worth it.

Also, just a thought, but you might want to find a way to start typing in Chinese characters on your computer. You don't want pinyin to be too much of a crutch while you're learning Chinese!
