500 Chegyu, for German Skritterers

Roland   April 26th, 2012 1:38a.m.

I have made a list with 500 Chengyu with German definitions. You can find the list here: http://www.skritter.com/vocab/list?list=161565733
It's taken out from the book: Sprichtwörtliche Redensarten
500 häufige Redewendungen
von Manfred W. Frühauf, 2010
and I got permission from the author and the publishing house to publish this list - so no copyright issue.
You'll find the explanation of the meaning in the definition and a more literal translation in the mnemonics.
The chengyus are not coming from a frequency list, but I checked with some Chinese people and they told me, that all of them are commonly known chengyus.
Warning: if you study this list, it may add quite a number of not so commonly used characters to your study list, so be careful.
Happy Learning!

Some chengyus are such fun, almost like riddles, so I looked at your list in spite of the "for German skritterers" and "contains obscure characters" warnings. I found that all the definitions are in English so I can enjoy them. Now I have to make sure I don't get too distracted by puzzling through them instead of keeping my review list to a manageable size.
Thanks!

This is a bit advanced for me, but I will have a look at them. I have recently bought a frequency-based book, 500 Common Chinese Idioms, by Jiao, Kubler and Zhang, published by Routledge. For 安居乐业, for example, it has two context examples, notes on usage, near synonyms and antonyms, about half a page of material. I think the context examples are good for me.
Thanks for the list,

Margaret (in Germany)

Absolut genial!
Thank you so much.
Is there any useful aditional information in the book itself?
I am right now at a Chinese level, where I spend alot of energy on learning Chengyu. I still feel its kind of artificial, because the Taiwanese people I converse with (I am on a 6 month stay in Taibei) almost never use Chengyu in a normal conversation, so its almost like learning Classical Chinese (which I also do). :D Anyway, at least for reading on a high level I guess its mendatory.

Also, you mentioned "explanation of the meaning". You dont mean a translation, but a more comprehensive meaning of the single components, right? I am pretty new to Skritter. So where exactly whould I find this additional information?

fangshi, I assume, you are using German as language - correct? I have edited the definitions, so you see the explanation in the definition field automatically. However, for the menemonics, you have to click "add word mnemonic" and then choose the German mnemonic.
The book itself has some more explanations, I had to shorten it sometimes, as the definitions were too long for Skritter. You'll find about 80 - 90 % of the book's content in Skritter.
Happy learning.
