Radical list

ZachH   June 10th, 2009 10:26a.m.

Radicals are a system to sort chinese characters by, it wasn't compiled to be a learning aid.

Using a 'common component' list would be better than using the full radical list.

Nick?
I suggest you remove radicals from the skritter list that aren't in the link. There are radicals I learnt from the skritter list that don't help me learn (simplified) characters at all - see 黹.

Or maybe form an alternative radical list.

What do other radical list veterans think? Especially those who learn traditional characters.

This is a good suggestion. When I made the radical list, I intended to sort it by common usage, but I didn't have any data to go by and just put them in order of importance from my limited experience. I think it's a good idea to take the non-component ones out, or put them at the end in differently named sections. This list is a good resource.

I will do this next time I upload more textbooks, yes.

A problem with the list now is that some of the components are for the traditional characters only while some are only for the simplified ones. I’d suggest at least separating it into two lists, with one for those learning the traditional characters and one for those learning the simplified ones.

By the way, at least there are these simplified characters 黺, 黻, 黼 sharing the component 黹.

A 'beginners radicals' list might be nice - the top 25 or 50 radicals. These would be quite easy to learn and would help in learning generally.
