Studying only a custom word list

luketpeterson   November 3rd, 2013 9:55p.m.

I want to create a custom word list that is a subset of the words I have "added", and I only want to study those words. I am using the iPhone app.

When I tap "Study", it cycles through all of the 500 or so words I've added, keeps track of how well I know each one, and focusses on the ones I need to work on. Works great.

I want that same behavior, except using a custom word list that is a subset of all of my words.

If I tap "Advanced Study", it just goes through each word in the custom word list, asks it once, and then it's done. It doesn't keep track of what I've done well on and where I need work. It just asks me each word once and then it is finished.

How do I get the behavior of "Study" with the word list of "Advanced Study".

It seems like a pretty simple requirement, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to do it in the interface.

It's maddening because this app is almost exactly what I need, but in its present form is useless to me.

Thank you.

The scheduling algorithm is the same for the Study and Advanced Study modes. Perhaps you already know the words really well in the subset list you created and so you see strange scheduling. Click on the "i" in the top right and check the "percentage due" for the words that you're seeing. Also, maybe your subset is too small.

I don't know what you mean by "and then it's done." Does the app stop? Do you see a blank screen? the number 42?

In any case, the regular Study mode should not be underestimated. In the long run you should study all of your words at appropriate intervals.

The Advanced Study mode does currently have a bug where it doesn't replenish the words, so it runs out. It's fixed in this app update I'm submitting tonight, so in a week or two, pending Apple approval, you should be good to go.
