Why all the example sentences have gone??

nick   January 6th, 2013 1:24p.m.

crajmaleon, try studying on the beta.skritter.com site--the example sentence system is in the middle of an upgrade, so it's unfortunately kind of busted on the live site, but is much improved on the beta site. Pretty soon we'll be able to get Japanese sentences in there, too.

Mats   January 7th, 2013 3:16p.m.

wow, just looked at the beta site, the new example sentences I think will be really helpful when learning new words, at least for a beginner/elementary student like myself :)

Schnabelhund   January 7th, 2013 6:40p.m.

Will they be shown in traditional characters soon?

nick   January 7th, 2013 8:05p.m.

It should depend on whether you have simplified, traditional, or both enabled. What behavior are you seeing, and what would you expect?

Schnabelhund   January 7th, 2013 8:24p.m.

Currently, only traditional is enabled and the sentences are shown in simplified. I’d like to see them in traditional.

Edit: Also, the sentences reveal the simplified variants of the traditional characters I’m supposed to review.

I’d also like to see them in traditional when I enable both in cases where there’s no difference between simplified and traditional. Will that be possible?

nick   January 7th, 2013 9:41p.m.

I'll work on this bug. I can have it default to traditional instead of simplified for the cases where the word you're prompted for is the same between simplified and traditional and you're studying both, but otherwise the sentence will match whether you're being prompted for a simplified or traditional word.

Thanks :)

Why is it that the purportedly "stable" site is broken and you have to use the beta to get it to work? I feel like this happens a lot...maybe you should switch the names of the two.

nick   January 10th, 2013 11:37p.m.

We make minor bugfixes and adjustments to new features on beta so that we are more sure not to bring the stable site down or anything like that. There are usually going to be a mixture of improvements and bugs on beta. In this case, we unfortunately had some backwards incompatibility in some of the new sentence stuff which did make problems for the stable site, but apart from this case, stable is actually more stable.

I know the sentence lookup is still in flux (I'm really excited by what I see in beta so far!), but I just thought I'd point out that currently (in beta) the "lookup more info on this sentence" gives all the sentences on a page as the last sentence on that page.

Schnabelhund   January 13th, 2013 7:25a.m.

Is there any progress with my problem, Nick? I really shouldn’t be seeing the characters in the example sentences.

nick   January 13th, 2013 1:13p.m.

I haven't had a chance to work on it yet, but I will get it soon.

nick   January 16th, 2013 1:11a.m.

I found and fixed part of the bug with this, but the rest of it is going to need a little more work, so I'm putting the sentences up with the simplified-only behavior. Hope to get the Japanese sentences and the trad display going later this week.

nick   January 16th, 2013 9:49p.m.

It should be good to go now with the traditional sentences. Let me know if there are further bugs.

DependableSkeleton   January 17th, 2013 11:11a.m.

When I click to change the sentence, the sentences other than the one I was initially shown are sometimes in simplified.
