What is the Chinese dictionary in iOS 6?

Sandeep   September 19th, 2012 2:48p.m.

As iOS 6 is out I was wondering if some one has managed to install it as it has a lot of china specific features.
What is the Chinese dictionary in there?

Is it GUIFAN?

Mike maybe you can shed some light on this now..

mikelove   September 19th, 2012 5:01p.m.

Yes, also included in Mac OS 10.8. Not official yet, but it looks like we're (finally!) about to sign a deal to update the version of Guifan in Pleco to the newest edition (and to offer that new edition to previous buyers free of charge), and with embedded images replacing all of those annoying ?s too.

(unfortunately, we can't just piggyback on Apple's license and start letting people access Guifan for free, but given the limitations of Apple's built-in dictionary app we think there are still plenty of reasons to buy a copy of Guifan from us)

Interesting side note: Apple ran a Chinese TV ad for the iPad a few months ago that was centered around education (a recut of a similar ad that aired elsewhere around the world), and because they didn't have a Chinese dictionary built into iOS yet, they used (with permission) the Pleco document reader and our version of Guifan to demonstrate a dictionary lookup.

Not sure whether they'd already licensed it and were looking for someone who offered it in a document reader app, or whether they discovered it by looking in Pleco, or whether this is just a random coincidence, but it's fun to think about regardless.

hi Mike,
Thanks for the inputs. I went through the video. Pretty interesting.

Sandeep   September 23rd, 2012 8:47a.m.

It doesn't get downloaded by default in iOS6 and one has to download once one try to look up a chinese word.

Maybe apple pays guifan on the basis of downloads and are trying to save licensing costs :-)

I selected a word in Anki, had the iOS options of [copy|define], clicked define, downloaded a dictionary, it didn't find the word, and now only [copy] appears when I select Chinese words.

How is the built in dictionary meant to work exactly :s?

If I install iOS 6 on my ipod, is it gonna mess my Skritter up? Who's done it?

shenqi   September 24th, 2012 12:24a.m.

I installed and no surprises. Actually it did seem to fix a bug I was getting where if I had the study screen open then locked my phone or opened another app, Skritter would forget where I was and restart at the home screen. Not really many reasons to upgrade, and am still mourning the loss of Google Maps.

Sandeep   September 24th, 2012 2:11a.m.

For me Skritter worked fine.

For chinese dictionary to work you need to select a chinese keyboard and then select a word/character.. It will popup a bar with select, copy, define etc.
Hit define and you get a popup with the definition(All in really difficult Chinese).. so for a beginner like me it is not of much use :-(

Byzanti   September 24th, 2012 6:33a.m.

Ah, I did that and now I can define Chinese words in Anki -- thanks Sandeep!

I'm not having any luck w/the Chinese Dictionary. If I select an English word, I'll see 'define' only if i select an English word and then it gives the English dictionary definition. If I select a Chinese word, I don't even get a 'define' option. I get cut/copy/paste. I get an option to switch/exchange which flips from simplified to traditional and vice-versa. The last option is to remember which basically adds it to the user-defined dictionary. I'm still at a loss as to how to get it to download and/or use the Chinese dictionary. Yes.. the language on my phone is Chinese (繁體中文)

Any ideas, tips? What am I missing?

Byzanti   September 25th, 2012 2:03p.m.

Go to someplace where you can enter text, type some Chinese. With the chinese keyboard selected, select the Chinese you've just written. Define should appear...
