Exporting a list of characters learned or in study

lennier61   October 1st, 2009 2:14a.m.

Federation gives a lot of importance to backups and re-backups.

It would be nice if we could export the list of characters and their status to a CVS or other kind of simple file either as backup or for having some printed record of what we have done.

Please listen to my plea oh Skritter creators, may it find echo among your blessed minds!

By the way, thanks a lot for the great card you sent, it was a great detail indeed.

Actually this topic just came up recently.

I've been working on an export feature the last couple days and I imagine it will be up and available this afternoon.

What I've made only returns the reading, definition, and writing of the words you have been studying. It sounds like you want the complete set of data instead, as in all the data we keep for your account. We can do that too, although there are a few ways we can format the data...

For one thing, we store two tables that are relevant: UserItem and Vocab tables. The useritems are units of knowledge, so one might measure how well you know a tone of a single character, and when you'll need to study it next. These point to one or more (if there are traditional versions) of the Vocab objects which store the definition, reading, writing, and other internal data.

I could either 'Join' them for you, or provide you with two tables so you can join them however you like.

You might want to try out how the data is exported when I release it later today, and see if that covers some or all of your needs. Exporting the UserItem table by itself would be best for backup (though we'd need to build a dedicated import function for downloading that kind of data back). On the other hand returning a joined UserItem-Vocab table would be better for having a more readable printout to look at, but data would probably be lost in order to simplify the data and make it more readable.

It's live! You can check it out here:

or go to any list and click the Advanced tab to export that list.

I'm gonna pay for another period just to show my gratitude.

Wow, this option is EXCELLENT!!! You are really great! I love Skritter more and more.

Now I think these are my four treasures of the study (文房四宝) of Chinese: New Practical Chinese Reader (I just learnt that expression on lesson 28), ChinesePod, the computer and of course SKRITTER!

By the way, don't you sell shares of your company? :)

scott   October 2nd, 2009 3:48p.m.

Thanks guys!

And thanks for the payment Bodin, any other features you really want? ;)

Well maybe we'll sell shares in the future, but not for the time being! We like having total, complete, unfettered control, yes we do.

That is great indeed!

Next step is make it formatted beautifully. :) I really love how nciku.com lets me print flashcards...

Bodin   October 3rd, 2009 4:59a.m.

Why print it when you have Anki?
Save trees with Anki.
Save Ink, brush with Skritter.

Exporting to flashcards I think will come later, but it's on the list. Of course, as usual with features, hearing lots of people wanting it will encourage us to do it faster!
