Skritter not Fetching new Characters for Studying

sveitser   September 12th, 2012 8:54p.m.

Skritter seems to lose the connection to your servers whenever it needs to fetch characters, which makes it practically impossible for me to use it. I just see the animated three dots in the upper left corner of the drawing field and nothing happens.

I need to refresh the page and wait for quite a while and then I can do a few characters before the same thing happens again. Sometimes refreshing doesn't even help and I just need to wait a few minutes.

I notice this both on my arch linux OS and in a Windows XP VM. My public IP is 143.89.190.34, in case that's of any use. I also tried running skritter through a VPN (in Hong Kong) but I notice the same issue.

I also noticed that a couple times recently. But not enough to make it annoying. I do about 10 minutes a day and it might happen once per session, near the end for me. I had thought it was just might internet connection.

sveitser, do you have a fast connection to other American websites at the same time as you're seeing these kind of problems with Skritter? Are you using skritter.com or skritter.cn?

If you're in Chrome or Firefox, you can use the developer console's net panel to see how long the Flash client's requests to the Skritter server are taking and whether they are erroring out, which might help narrow things down. Let me know if you want more info on how to check that out.

Thanks for the reply Nick. I usually don't have any problems with any websites. Skritter doesn't feel slow either, it just doesn't fetch new characters once I've done the first few. Pinging takes about 150ms. I'm using skritter.com but just tried skritter.cn and the issue is there as well. I'm in Hong Kong, outside the great firewall so I think using skritter.cn isn't really necessary anyway.

I'm on a university network so I'm thinking there could be all sorts of black magic going on in between ^^

The iOS app works fine on my iPod but I'm guessing it only connects to the servers when syncing and not every couple of exercises.

Hmm. Do you see the same problem on www and beta?

sveitser   September 15th, 2012 12:41a.m.

I usually use beta. Before I made the original post I tried stable and experienced the same issues. Now I tried on stable again and everything seems okay. On beta the issue persists though.

Anyway thanks for the quick replies, as always :) I can use the stable version for now. I'll check back on beta once in a while and will let you know if the problem persists.

This is also now happening more frequently for me in the beta version. Frequent page reloads are becoming necessary. At first it was every couple minutes, then it was every couple of prompts. The www is ok.

Niquey   September 16th, 2012 1:48p.m.

Hmm. This morning, under beta, it has ceased to fetch anymore words. Simply showing the three loading dots. The www's still fine. :)

nick   September 17th, 2012 2:57p.m.

I see a problem that would be causing this on beta. I'm uploading a fix. Do you still see the issue?

Niquey   September 18th, 2012 8:25p.m.

It's seems all good now on my end :)

sveitser   September 18th, 2012 10:20p.m.

Did just ten minutes this morning but seems all good yeah! Thanks!
